On this site, I'll showcase and discuss the Victorian and Edwardian garments I've made to support my job at a small historical house museum, my "living history" reenacting, and my vintage dancing hobby. I'm doing this as a website rather than a blog because my opportunities to update it are generally few and far between. In fact, we'll see how far I get in putting something online on my first day!
This page started as the electronic notebook of my weekly assignments for "The History of Costume," a University of Alaska-Fairbanks course I audited online.
As usual, the new year is making me want some new gowns. We'll see what emerges from my sewing room first — as soon as I get said sewing room cleaned up to a state of usefulness again. (A sudden need for sleeping space for guests resulted in all the house's detritus being hidden there in November, then the holidays and a general horror of housework prevented me from doing anything about it since then.)
My previous site had pages grouping dresses in the order in which I created them. I've redesigned this site so that garments are grouped chronologically by period. For each period/style, the gowns will be grouped in roughly the order in which they were created (i.e., generally oldest to most recent, so you ought to be able to track improvements in fabric selection, fit, styling, and overall historical accuracy).
I hope you enjoy this virtual walk through my historical closet! — Karen Ann
